Wow, it's been a long time

Ok, so it has been a long time since I have posted anything. A few days after my last post, my husband decided to drop a bombshell on me, he wasn't happy and if things didn't change then he was leaving. I decided to look at my life long and hard, I knew I didn't wnt to loose him, he is a great guy. I decided that I needed to get some type of job so he doesn't think I just sit at home all day and knit. I updated my resume and sent it out to dozens of people, I went and filled outapplications everywhere I could think of, nobody called. That was very upsetting, I mean I have a college degree and I couldn't get a job. So, I started thinking about career paths and things like that and what I wanted to do with my life, besides being a wife and mother.
The best thing I could think of was I think would like to be a substitute teacher. So, I put in my application and the process of getting hired took a few months, I didn't get my first substitute job until the last week in October. I have been working at least 2 or 3 days a week since then. As I was doing this I decided that I think I want to be a teacher, so I started looking into what I need to do to get my teaching certification. Yikes, I have to go back to school! I have been out of school for a while, so this made my palms really sweaty and I got all panicky and I think I actually swooned! Anyway, I have been getting everything ready to go back to school, and my husband is happy because he can see a steady income for me inthe future, instead of odd jobs and painting peoples houses. So, that's why I haven't posted in almost a year.
I know what you are saying, yeah that' great and all, but what about the knitting! Well, I will have to post about that in the next post! (I know I'm Teasing you)

After I made the sun tops I went through a sewing phase, I sewed mostly for my daughter but a few things for myself and a few for my husband. He even went to the fabric store and bought fabric for me! After a while I started to get tired of sewing and decided I wanted to do more knitting. My mom asked if I wanted to be a part of this knit a long that she heard about through the Lion Brand website. I decided I would participate, so it was my mom, my future sister in law & myself. My sister (Jessica) wanted to but she had so much stuff going on with school & work, so I decided I would make one for her too! This knit-a-long was the Textured Shrug KAL, the pattern is from Stephanie Japel's GlamKnits book. I absolutely loved being able to ask her questions when I wasn't able to figure something out. I saw the book on sale on the Knit Picks website, so I decided to get it. I got this book in and have not been able to put it down since. I decided to make a good bit of Christmas presents from this book. I finished my shrug, it came out beautifully it's a wonderful silver gray color!

So, from this book I'm making Puff Sleeved Hoodie for my future sister in law & my sister (Ashley), they both wanted black & grayish colors. I finished the first one about 2 weeks after i started, i knitted a swatch but it still came out too large, so I will give this one to my stepmother for Christmas (it fit her perfectly). I'm working on future SIL's now, using a variegated black & gray. I will work on my sisters after, hers is a dark gray that has lighter gray halo.

In between working on these I knit my first drop stitch shawl, its a beautiful copper color I was initially making this for my mother in law, but since she has red hair i decided to give it to my mother (she's a blonde), I also knit 2 other things for my mom for Christmas which I will write about later.

At the same time I also decided that I wanted a few things out of the GlamKnits book! I started making the Uneck Tunic Dress out of mini mochi and the Bamboo Tunic out of Berroco Bonsai.I just finished blocking the U-neck tunic last night, it is beautiful. I think I need 1 more ball of yarn for the Bamboo tunic.

My sister Jessica decided that she wanted the Zigzag lace Wraparound in Black for Christmas. I have never knit lace before so this has been challenging for me. Even though this is a very easy lace pattern, I have ADD so I get sidetracked very easily. I have frogged it twice. I will restart it again sometime this week!

I also learned the Turkish cast on this week & knit my first pair of toe up socks! I used the Lion Brand sock yarn, in the pink colorway. They came out fairly good, I just need to work on getting the correct size.

If you would like to look at any or all of my projects, I have them posted on my ravelry page, my name on ravelry is mamofalex. Check them out & add me as a friend!

Introduction

Hi! My name is Melissa, I am married and have a beautiful 18 month old daughter. We also have 2 boxers, a fawn male & a white female. I am an Independent Beauty Consultant in Mary Kay, I absolutely love the flexibility that I have with this business. Because of my flexibility I am able to get a lot of knitting in!
My mother taught me to knit when I was in college, she is self taught. I made tons of scarves, oh, I forgot to say that we live in Southern Louisiana, so needless to say I dont wear scarves all that often. I graduated from college in 2003 with a major in Visual Arts and kind of forgot about knitting. I picked knitting up again in 2007 and continued making my flat pieces, a few more scarves then I moved on to blankets, lots of blankets.
I had my daughter in January of 2008, therefor my knitting went to baby stuff. I was happy making baby blankets for a while, then my mom showed me a pattern that she had gotten from the lion brand website, it was so cute we just had to try it! It' s pattern #70302AD Child's Sun Top, my mom did it exacly like its shown in the photo. I however used I love this cotton, from Hobby Lobby. The top came out so cute and it was so soft. I made 2 tops and 2 dresses out of this pattern. I thought that doing shaping was going to be hard so I never tried it. I was so excited after I completed these that I wanted to keep going....
